FuEL Awards

All FuEL Awards candidates will be evaluated through a two-step judging process according to the following criteria:

  1. Innovation: 25%
  2. Community building/social responsibility: 15%
  3. Job creation/employment practices: 15%
  4. Commercial results/potential: 25%
  5. Total votes: 20%

Preliminary judging will be conducted by members of Impact Entrepreneurship Group. The applications of the candidates receiving the highest preliminary scores will be forwarded to the FuEL National Judging Panel for re-evaluation. All FuEL candidates will be considered for the FuEL People's Choice Award, which will go to the entrepreneur who attracts the most votes through the close of voting on July 31, 2012 at 11:59 pm EDT.

Sarah is the founder of Toronto-based Sprouter.com, an online platform facilitating knowledge exchange between startups and business leaders. An entrepreneur long immersed in the startup community, Sarah has robust familiarity with the common pitfalls of early stage startups and the approaches that foster success. Sarah is frequently in the media and has been profiled by numerous prestigious publications including The Wall Street Journal and PROFIT Magazine.

Harley Finkelstein is an entrepreneur and lawyer, who has an extensive background in startups and eCommerce. Harley is currently the CPO (Chief Platform Officer) at Ottawa-based Shopify, the web's leading eCommerce platform, and which was No. 7 on the 2010 PROFIT HOT 50 ranking of Canada’s Top New Growth Companies. He started his first company at age 17, while a student at McGill, and has been building companies ever since. Harley completed his law degree as well as his MBA at the University of Ottawa, where he co-founded the JD/MBA Student Society and the Canadian MBA Oath. Additionally, Harley serves as a mentor and advisor to a number of Canadian-based entrepreneurial organizations, including the Ottawa Centre for Regional Innovation and the Canadian Youth Business Foundation.

Kunal Gupta is the CEO at Polar Mobile, a Toronto-based software company that in a few short years has positioned itself as a global leader in mobile. Hundreds of media companies work with Polar Mobile to launch branded mobile Apps across every device and the company has customers in over 10 countries today. Kunal is also the Founder & Chair of the Board for the Impact Entrepreneurship Group (www.impact.org), a youth-led non-profit organization focused on getting young people excited about entrepreneurship across Canada.


Mike Jagger

Mike Jagger is the founder and president of Vancouver-based Provident Security Corp. Launched in 1996 while Mike was studying criminology at Simon Fraser University, Provident now has more than 200 employees and is the only security firm in North America that provides installation, service, monitoring and guaranteed five-minute response to clients’ alarm systems. In 2001, at age 26, Mike was recognized by Business in Vancouver magazine as the youngest ever recipient of its Forty Under 40 award. Provident has been recognized three times as one of the 25 Best Places to Work by B.C. Business magazine. A graduate of the Birthing of Giants program at MIT, Mike is a past president of the Vancouver chapter of the Entrepreneurs’ Organization.
